i hate suburbs as much as the next person-who-is-interested-in-city-planning. but they're also so fascinating in how fucked up they are. We need more suburban gothic à la Stepford Wives and Edward Scissorhands : the monster is the suburb itself.
The suburbs hate you, and they want you dead
the suburbs are not like the others. They are "civilized" unlike rural areas. & they reject the way the city forces you to bump shoulders with all kinds of people who are different from you. They self-maintain out of fear, and of rejection baked into their design -- cul-de-sacs and windy roads and low housing density mean that adding buses thatre actually effective becomes tricky.
they self-sabotage out of NIMBY fear. things that would benefit the suburbs and also "inner city folks" (black ppl, it's racism) are shut down. Nobody leaves their fence-bordered properties. theyre poisoning themselves.
an ultrarich google cofounder has a huge mansion adjacent to a suburb which purposefully does not put in sidewalks or streetlights to keep a "rustic feel"
