It is clear this site has moderation problems and the inability to take genuine concerns from non-white voices seriously. I know Cohost has a small staff, but if the same users are repeatedly evading bans to be racist to other people, then that shit should be at the top of the priority list. It is extremely disappointing.
I can count on one hand the number of people I follow who have boosted these problems with moderation and racism. White ppl, if you want to stop feeling bad about this, you have to be more proactive. Be loud about it. Make it annoying. Take it upon yourselves to mass block these ppl. Make them feel unwelcome. Make the site notice. Take responsibility of the culture. Cause people to second guess giving their money to this website. Make it a problem! If this is supposed to be THE leftist site, then make it fucking leftist. Make the racism that happens on this site matter.
And please, stop circulating self-congratulatory posts teaching racist white people how not to be racist. These people do not deserve the benefit of the doubt. If you catch yourself empathizing with them, ask yourself who you empathize with more: the racists or the people getting slammed with harassment?
It especially sucks because the author of one of the big "how-not-to-be-racist" posts going around HAS said racist shit to me! On multiple occasions! One of those occasions was in the last couple months!!
You all have to stop ignoring us in favor of your own comfort. Addressing racism will never feel comfortable.
I'm a volunteer moderator for a good-sized Twitch channel, and hang out with the mods for the affiliated discord (about 45,000 people). I might be biased, but I think it's one of the best moderated communities on the Internet (or at least the RPG sphere, which is where these communities live). Our attitude is that there's a whole wide internet where people can be pieces of shit and post whatever they want, but in order for the space as a whole to not only be welcoming, but successful, we have to engage in a kind of curation. Sometimes that means that a first-time chatter gets an immediate ban if they're starting off really weird. Sometimes it means banning someone whose been active and around for awhile because they're causing others to be uncomfortable.
The point of bans is that they are not executions -- they are a strong first step in community management. On Twitch, we read and discuss all of the unban requests. If someone seems sufficiently apologetic, admits wrongdoing, or otherwise explains their behavior, we often lift bans, depending on the severity of the infraction. Obviously, bigotry is an instant and irrevocable ban.
My point is that moderation is a key part of any online space, and imo should be deployed fairly liberally in order to have a growing and successful community
The report also revealed that a further two million Uighurs had been “forced into so-called re-education camps for political and culcultural indoctrination” beginning in the middle of 2017. Other reports put the figure at one million.
The detentions, forcible training as well as alleged abuses inside enclosed government facilities were later described by the United States and many international human rights groups as a form of genocide constituting “crimes against humanity”.
I mean, if you uncritically support the CCP over measures like this, I don't think we are going to see eye-to-eye when push comes to shove.
For that matter, we could also start talking about Tibet, but I think there's generally more widespread knowledge about repression there, at least in Western media. You all can find your own article links for that.
forced labor of the Uyghur people is a huge component of the global capitalist system, enriching the government which is attempting to destroy them.
The Uyghur people & culture are burned as fuel to drive chinese manufacturing.
