Spurred on by Microprose's old Magic the Gathering game working but also really not working as it should on multiple XP machines/older VMs I decided the only sensible thing to do was acquire a "Ooh look 300mHz processor" kind of Win 98SE laptop and do it properly :D

It's going to be fun getting this all set up just the way I want it, and although it's not going to get as much use as my XP portables, it's nice to know I've got this on hand for either general retro emergencies or the odd bit of DOS-ness :D

I forget, you don't own any PC-98 laptops, do you? Every couple of months, I side-eye those things as a potential way to sidestep owning a proper bulky desktop setup, but something in the back of my mind tells me that those computers being what they are, getting a laptop is probably a devil's bargain in some way I'm not aware of. πŸ˜…

I don't, but I'd love to! From my limited prods at that side of thing, the main pitfalls seem to be sound (check the laptop actually has some sort of sound hardware and isn't a beep-only machine), and making sure it has a working floppy/CD drive - but you'd have to check for those on a regular machine too considering the era anyway.

That all makes sense! Thanks! Now I'm not quite so scared to look into it, then, ahaha. I love the full desktops and still want one regardless, but... in a two bedroom apartment where my office is already going to be doubling as my arcade PCB area, I figure I gotta make compromises somewhere until I get more space, ahaha. I'll let you how things go if I end up pursuing things, of course. c:

This is why I always end up with laptops myself: I adore the big machines, but at the same time there really is no space for anything like that here.

(I have just realised I now have a literal [small] stack of laptops)
