Me, in mid-January:

"Hm, I think I should finally complete modding my Game Boy Color. Modern screen replacements are available aplenty now, unlike a couple years ago..."

Me, today:

"... I'm out. I should just toss it all on eBay, let someone else deal with this shit."

To elaborate...

~ Several years ago ~

  • Planned to mod my GBC with whatever (I think) BennVenn's first GBC screen kit was
  • Ordered two translucent shells of different colors, planning to mix their front and back halves
  • Installed a blue power LED, because the "back half shell" and buttons are blue
  • Wanted to get it from UK store, as they were geographically the closest and least likely to cause me customs grief, but they never actually got it in stock
    • Oh, the different shells didn't fit together well, either
  • Put the GBC and parts into a drawer

~ Fast-forward to January 2023 ~

...

  • Ordered a "Q5 OSD IPS V2" kit, or whatever it's called, the names are all meaningless, dumb and confusing
    • Quick test outside a shell and without a cartridge makes it appear to work fine and look great, too
  • Ordered a black shell made for IPS screens, i.e. no cutting the plastic required, and a set of purple-blue buttons
  • Standoffs for button contact pads in the shell are flimsy and break almost immediately
  • Shell does fit the new screen, but it's basically impossible to also fit the PCB that the kit I got requires
    • I guess this one's meant for kits that have all the smarts on the ribbon cable, not a separate board?
  • Ordered a different shell, this time just translucent white, which requires minor cutting to support modern screens
  • Shell arrived, I installed everything into it, then noticed the graphical glitches in Pokemon Silver and other games

  • Tried to look things up, this issue, general advice, pitfalls, etc.
  • Came to the conclusion that, probably, everything is drawing too much power and the stock power regulation isn't good enough

  • Removed the blue LED, scrambled to find the original one, put that back in, no change
  • Ordered 1) replacement capacitor of different-than-original spec for cleaner sound output, and 2) replacement voltage regulator board, made specifically for GBCs, for better main 5V supply
  • Installed capacitor, removed much of the audible background noise and actually improved the graphical glitches somewhat!
    • The Game Freak logo also momentarily glitched out before, which it stopped doing at this point
  • Was hopeful the new voltage regulation would fix things, considering a kinda unrelated capacitor already helped!

  • Installed voltage regulator board, after struggling a lot with the old one
  • No change whatsoever

  • Be very pissed, decide to likely throw everything onto eBay to recoup my costs (and ugh, I spent way too much on this...), write these chosts(...?)

Yeah, I follow a modding YouTuber mostly for fun since I don't have the skills for it (kinda hoping to change that this year and learn to do at least some basic soldering for game maintenance) and the GBA and GBC scenes just feel like a clusterfuck of parts and brands of varying levels of compatibility to the degree that it's certainly made me think twice about going down that rabbit hole. I've been thinking of getting a Famicom GBA SP and then holding out for a no cut backlit screen solution for those because I guess Nintendo never shipped AGS-101s to Japan for whatever baffling reason, but I suspect that like you, I'll probably be in for a penny, in for a pound. I might just buy something premodded in the end provided I can trust the seller and the parts, even if the cheapass in me doesn't want to ahaha.

Anyway, I super feel you. You are definitely not the first one I've heard having to throw away more money than they expected trying to make sense of all that, so I don't blame you in the least for cutting your losses and moving on.

GBA and GBC in particular really do seem like quite the clusterfuck, yup. All the different types of kits, with and without on-screen displays, with or without laminated screens, meaningless version numbers because every brand just wants to one-up the other anyway, then shells that fit these kinds of screens but oh, not those, don't confuse them! It's ridiculous. My GBA is modded too and still working great (tho it's always been a bit ugly, because I didn't do the cleanest job installing the screen), so I'll just continue using that for GB and GBC games as well.

Have to say tho, it's surprising to hear that the AGS-101 never made it to Japan at all! Wonder why that's the case... Maybe they did want to shift focus solely to the DS despite all the "third pillar" talk, considering (at least according to Wikipedia) the 101 was released in 2005, i.e. the year after the DS lauched?

... anyway, this mess honestly make me a bit hesitant to try upgrading the screen in that WonderSwan Color I got. But on the other hand, it's a WonderSwan. They're still infinitely less popular than the Game Boys, despite the recent uptick due to those screens, so there's much less competition, and thus confusion, when it comes to aftermarket parts...

I bought a backlit screen for my Pocket some five years ago and haven't gathered the courage to actually perform the mod yet. Especially since, and here's the kicker, I heard a friend recently destroyed not one, but two Pockets attempting the same mod recently.

Oof, that sucks... I gotta ask tho, did you and your friend get full-on screen replacements, or backlight kits to retrofit the original screens with? Because with the latter, you have to peel the original screen's layers apart, more or less, which can easily damage it. On the other hand, with modern replacement screens, you just have to unplug and remove the original, then install the new one in the shell, so that shouldn't lead to catastrophic damage so easily...
