"So... you're saying that when people die, their souls return to the planet."

"Yes!" Terra Warrior Sunset beamed at the smoke-covered entity of darkness across from him.

"Just like us, then. You defeat us, we return to the Abyss, we come back stronger. I don't see what the big deal is."

"Except that one time, remember? When Nightmare Bronze came back but lost her memory? She was almost like a different person entirely."

Nightmare Sulfur scratched her head. "Yeah, that sucked. She joined up with you guys for a while, and when she hits you it really hurts."

"Boy, don't I know it," murmured Sunset. "But, it didn't just suck to fight her, right? Weren't you worried she might have really changed?"

Sulfur looked away, and the smoke around her head puffed up. "No!"

Sunset gave her a look.

"Okay, yes, fine, you happy? Never, ever tell her I was worried about her, or I'll splatter you across the wall."

Sunset rolled his eyes. "Okay, yes, fine. But now! Imagine that when we defeated you that you never remembered. That you could be a different person every time, with no connections at all to the people you cared about."

Sulfur looked at him for a few moments, her smoky arms folded in front of her. "...that would suck."

"Yes! It would! Okay, so now," he said, his excitement growing, "what would you say if I told you that every time you kill a human, they come back completely different? No memories, no connections, we don't even get more powerful!"

Sulfur looked at him for a very long time. Her eyes glowed like coal embers within her cloud of smoke. He could practically feel the gears turning in her head. He placed his hand on his thigh to prevent it from bouncing, waiting for-

"Okay, but that can't be right, because you keep coming back. And you do get stronger!"

Sunset let out a held breath and rubbed his forehead. "I'm a special- I already explained-" he took a deep breath, looked up at the cavernous ceiling. "Okay. Let's take it from the top."
