"You have no choice but to revolutionize the world" here feels like the point of the interview sequence, like you need the opening of someone having a wish in their heart that's incompatible with the world as it is, so that they're willing to reject the world/break from the structures of the "prosaic" world and become a duelist or make their heart vulnerable or something.

Relatedly, while I've mostly been thinking of Utena in terms of Jennagames for obvious reasons, now I sorta feel like an all-duelist secrets-and-powers LARP inspired by Utena would be pretty classy.

oh interesting, I like that read! I guess Kanae's wish is incompatible with the world as it is because she can't become Akio's wife without also becoming Anthy's sister-in-law, and the social strictures that surround her make it impossible for her to avoid Anthy or cut Anthy out of her life?

ooh that does sound like a fun game concept! I feel like there's some interesting potential for weird combat mechanics there – cards/packets that are both memories and abilities, to represent the psychological nature of the duels?

Yeah, I dunno how I'd make the duels satisfying in a LARP, that does feel easier in a ttrpg. Like, in a LARP you'd want something that's flashy and fun to watch, but also that rewards emotional engagement and knowing stuff about your opponent, and that seems like a tough needle to thread unless there's like a pre-duel bit as players where you work out what psychological buffs you have and then you boffer or nerf about it to decide the winner.
