This post has content warnings for: bluesky ranting.

honestly excited to see Bluesky push the "what if EVERYTHING was solvable through tech?" thought experiment. I think it's a stupid experiment and anybody who ran a website in the past 15 years knew that already but Bluesky got millions of VC funding riding on that belief so I guess if they want to do that, so be it, it's their money to burn.

  • Rude: like, come on lol
  • Misinformation: because we all know misinformation is easy to detect at scale
  • Intolerance: yeah I'm sure this will never get abused or manipulated to target marginalized groups ever
  • "inauthentic account" being described as "bot or person pretending to be someone else" while ALSO having "impersonation" is extremely funny. What's the distinction? Who fucking knows, good luck.

So many of these are such blatant cases of "i know it when i see it" that thinking you can automate them is very funny. But again, their money, not mine.

Your posts automatically get sorted into categories it detects and users can report posts, yeah, but afaik it's doing it all using LLM detection. My NSFW art post was immediately tagged as adult content, and I could appeal the tag, since there's almost assuredly a chance of it pulling a false positive by doing shit automatically like that.

allegedly there will be "labelling services" that (I suppose) would involved manual labelling but I refuse to believe a lot of people will bother outside of the extremely obvious/egregious stuff and it remains to be seen how practical it is for anyone but Bluesky-the-corporation to run one

oh yeah that's like, how they do moderation now is you 'subscribe' to moderation lists like blocklists. I didn't realize you could click on that?? and that it's required?? show me the rumors, admins

separate settings for "sexually suggestive" and "sexually suggestive (cartoon)" is so fucking funny. who is this level of granularity for

"yeah if my boss sees me scrolling past a bikini photo I'll get fired but hentai is fine"

in reply to @eramdam's post:

its so funny that like

bsky: has to hide everything with ai; still fucks it up

cohost: moderation team glued together with popsickle sticks and good will not a ton of shit to hide, our users tag shit

i know the ratios are different; but it's almost like if you start off iwth a good userbase and grow slowly, establishing social norms its better than "we forked the shittiest userbase on earth"

in reply to @eramdam's post:

To be clear, they can (and had and will) remove stuff at will if they deem it doesn't have a place on the site. The moderation-by-labels stuff is meant as a "first step" in moderation.

I wasn't keen on the whole idea of bluesky being sold as "hey it's twitter again in every bad sense but somehow more snob", but every new thing I learn about the platform makes me wonder why would anyone not only jump on that boat but then stay on it.

Unless, I suppose, driven by mandatory reasons: the need to be connected to an audience for work, for example, even if you already debunked that idea with excelent explanations and number-backed data. Or being held at gunpoint, I guess.
