Still working on my art, as always. This technique is:

  1. Rough sketch
  2. First pass with technical pen (round nib, uniform size)
  3. Zoom in, second pass with brush pen (pointed nib, pressure-sensitive)
  4. Third pass with technical pen

The big change to my mode of thinking is that it's trivial to erase inks when they're digital. I was trained on practical media, this is a big deal. 👵

I always worry that my colors tend to spread out across the rainbow, and often wander into cool temperatures. To that end:

  1. Limited palette, chosen in advance
  2. Undercoat of a warm color (orange or pink), gradiated
  3. One layer of super-flat colors at 81% opacity to let the undercoat show through
  4. Shadow layer using tone correction, biased towards purple
  5. Highlight layer using tone correction, biased towards yellow

I hope it doesn't look too computery. Gradients scare me!

It's always super interesting to get a look at someone's process! With the range of tools and techniques available, the way in which different people approach things can be supremely useful to consider for your own work, even across different disciplines. Seeing folks painting miniatures with orange or pink 'filters' as basecoats, for example, looks reminiscent of how you start your colouring. Cross-medium methods!

i've recently gone back to traditional to "retrain" myself, and hopefully get better about digital inking in its entirety. Honestly i feel as though i put more nuance in my trad work over the digitals.. and i still wanna get over that hump. :B

I know some artists who still scan. I do feel that I can get a lot more energy out of my practical media. But I also want to do more, and better, and faster, so I try to find ways to make the machine work for me. Good luck with your own efforts! 💙
