  1. They don't have to have under-age fan service in them, but all the top-rated ones do.
  2. They don't have to be extremely wordy, with characters over-explaining and belaboring their points, or with other people asking prompting questions that simply repeat the same words ("Metal Gear?"), but many of the best games do.
  3. They don't have to have a divergence into dodgy pseudo-science late in the game, but many of the best games do.
  4. There's always another game out there that's like this game, but not as good as this game, so this game is better by comparison.

I often think about this comment by Nick Capozzoli: that "games are good". There was extended discourse that a certain product was "not a game" because, if all games are good, and this product is not good, it must not be a game. ☹️
By extension, I do realize that fans of a genre are going to elevate anything in their genre. VNs are good, therefore this one must be good.
It becomes troubling when an outsider is looking for the critical discourse on what makes for good examples of the genre. If all the top recommendations have youths, wordiness, and paranormality, then obviously there must be something about those three elements that fans of this genre enjoy. Yes, we can agree that there are people who read Playboy for the articles, but that's not what sells the mag.
On the other hand, a lack of critical discourse leads to the tropes being elevated above the actual substance. That's where the David Cage or Bloober Team comes in, where they take all the elements of what makes "a good game story" and mash them together with no coherence. This lack of awareness rarefies the genre even further, when there are people who are fans of this kind of thing. "It's dumb but it's fun in spite of all this," even though "this" was the big lure in the first place. 🤔
