I am reminded of a video game I play (Final Fantasy 14) that has attempted the usual animator-time-saving trick of rigging emotes, poses, facial expressions once and then trusting that by doing it carefully enough, and keeping character models similar enough, the emotes will work well for everyone! Yay, they only had to make one animation for each thing! And mostly they succeeded.
Except the facial expressions... run into some problems. And one of my friends figured out that if you have just the right character configuration, the evil sneer which is meant to look between angry and intimating becomes the most bedroom-ready come-hither smoulder I have ever seen in a video game. I've seen professional porn that did a worse job selling the "I'm down, are you down?" look. I guess the gap between anger and smoulder is just very narrow.
