The new Patreon content guidelines are out. There are few surprises in it. Mostly, it includes new things that are emphatically banned, rather than implicitly banned.
"Fantasy violence" is acknowledged as something that exists, but there is no provision for "fantasy sex". It would be acceptable to use Patreon to promote a stream of Call of Duty - a game that advertises high-resolution depictions of how to own and to operate name-brand weapons while committing actual war crimes - as long as it's "fantasy violence". But no vampires. 🤔
I suppose, by some definition, if one consents to be a soldier or to be an orc, one consents to be killed? But not when one puts on a costume? ☹️
Been spending some more time reading the guidelines, and there's plenty of confusion to be had. Hopefully the mods can give us some enlightenment.
The guidelines use two words a fair amount: normalizing and glorifying. It's not clear what these words mean, in context. Does writing a fictional story about a topic "normalize" it? (Would a Gor novel "normalize" Gorean philosophy? etc.) Is "glorifying" when a character prevails or succeeds while embodying a topic or theme; is this some kind of Hayes-Code issue where it's okay to have a gangster as the hero, as long as they get a comeuppance at the end?
The mods could solve a lot of problems if they used the words "in a fantasy context" or "in a fictional context" a lot more, if that's what they intend.
