welcome to my personal hell

dragon warrior iii for the game boy color describes me as "stubborn", and i'm tempted to agree with that assessment

one of the neat things about super mario advance 2: super mario world are all the little changes and tweaks they did to the game. it's not just the snes game hastily rebadged in gba form, they actually added a handful of things. a new intro, a new little cutscene when you get 96 exits, a list of levels with level select after finishing them all, persistent dragon coins in every level... it's a lot! even if there are some rough edges with the palettes and sound, they still put a lot of effort into it.

handhelds used to provide these interesting comparisons, where their hardware was roughly comparable to the consoles of a previous-ish generation. the psp was roughly on par with the ps1~2, the ds was roughly on par with the n64; the gba, the snes, that sort of thing.

so you would sometimes see games ported to similar enough hardware that they weren't "remasters" or "remakes", but also not just straight ports; more of a sort of "enhanced version". a chance to go back and add in some quality of life changes or little bonuses that maybe you weren't able to last time.

(one of the main features you see tends to be persistence and saving, both from the portable games having more but shorter play sessions, and from it just being a really nice qol / replayability bonus.)

i think they're neat

in reply to @xkeeper's post:

This was how I experienced SMB2, SMW, and Yoshi's Island as a kid. Caused endless confusion for poor little me looking at internet stuff about the games for the longest time

People think i’m crazy for liking GBA SMW over the SNES version, but running spinjumps on GBA was the definition of comfort. Especially with all the QOL and the better, brighter colors. (Even on the OG GBA the colors are bright and sharp). I can never go to the SNES version as Y + A cramps my hand.
