I've never really been one who's been able to do book club reading. Book clubs require pacing, require the self-control to hold oneself back when reading something engrossing. Or they require the commitment and dedication to finish a book that you have no interest in continuing.

Both of these are hard. I'm very all or nothing when it comes to books. As I have no book club to speak my thoughts to, I'm going to go through some of the books and graphic novels I read this year and give you my thoughts on them. If you have thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Maybe we can make this our own impromptu book club of sorts? Just you and me? (I won't tell anyone!)

Even Though I Knew The End by C.L. Polk What a fuckin novella. I'm a sucker for weird angel bullshit, and also queer romance, and this pulled on both those strings so well. Whirlwind of a read, and I'd deeply love to see more in this world. But don't make it a series. I hate making things series that work better as standalone stories. This book was delicious and perfect and if you want a quick noir read that gets your blood pumping, give this one a shot. It's about an angel hunting a vampire. But plot twist, the vampire actually ISN'T the love interest. I think. I don't remember? I just know this book was good The Rook by Daniel O'Malley spooky magic secret agents spooky magic secret agents

God I eat this shit up. Give me weird government bureaucracy mixed with conspiracies mixed with magic. Can you tell I grew up watching Warehouse 13 and Eureka? I am watching the X-Files now for the first time. This should be a shock to you.

Anyway, this series whips tho I've not read the third one yet. Anyone has? Is it good? Give this one a look folks.

WHEW i actually read a lot of books this year. I shouldn't do this for all of them. I'll pick one more that stunned me, and then y'all put your reads in the comments if you'd like.

Wild Massive by Scotto Moore This is a book by a playwright. This is a book by a playwright with really cool ideas about worldbuilding, and also narrative structure. It's set in a massive tower where each floor is a different universe...sort of. Hard to explain that. In this surreal fantasy, there's a delicious amount of deep character crafting, and legitimately funny as fuck writing. Coupled with that is the fact that this ties into his other book he wrote "Battle of the Linguist Mages", which is also a blast. Give this one a read. It's got shapeshifters, some genders, mega corps, and plays with narrative tropes in a delightful way. Love love love this.
