every time I see someone render a yinglet accent in English as if every s turns into a z (it doesn't), I just assume whoever is making that mistake is French. at least half the time I've been right

why the French translation of Out of Placers decided on the "hair on the tongue" lisp, which turns s sounds into z sounds, because there is no "th" sound in French to struggle with. it doesn't really make much physiological sense, but they needed *something* or the dialogue about their speech impediment would make no sense. having to make this choice is a very common issue translators of the comic run into

I get that, yeah, and being familiar with pinyin sometimes does the same to me if I'm not expecting it... but it's probably the best way to make the writing more readable, while still getting the accent across

The french translation of the comic decided to get the ying accent across by replacing s with z since french doesn't have the th to yingify.

So the answer to your why is "because that french guy decided it"
