In the cacophony of modern life, it is rare to have a quiet moment. This is especially true living in a city. The moment you walk out your door and absolute wall of sound strikes your eardrums with headache-inducing force. The sounds of cars revving, horns honking, people shouting to be heard over the ambient noises, all of it swarms you.

You arrive at work. It's loud there too. Just a different kind of loud. Fluorescent lights hum overhead. Phones ring. Keyboards clatter and clack while mice click away repeatedly. And you only add to this noise. Colleagues fill what little dead air there would be with chatter, gossip, arguments, jokes. Never a quiet moment during your whole day of work.

After work you run your errands, stopping by a grocery store. Dull top 40s pop plays over the PA occasionally interrupted by a store announcement. Shopping carts rattle loudly down the aisles as you gather items off your list. Your cart has a squeaky wheel. Great. The register beeps loudly with every item. "Remember to take your receipt!" The automated voice of the self check out chirps to you in an annoying tone.

Once again, you push through the wall of sound to get back home. Your keys jingle as you reach your door. It slams shut behind you and the sound cuts out.

Nothing.

Quiet.

"Thank God," you mutter to the comforting silence that welcomes you.
