I used to get my haircuts at a salon, and recently I switched to a place that calls itself a barber shop. I can't really tell the difference, they seem essentially identical in every way, so I'm forced to conclude that the difference is that a barber shop does not attempt to sell you a $25 bottle of shampoo after your $100 haircut

Back in the day I rode the bus past a barber shop that had a sign out saying "Barber on duty - walk-ins welcome" and I felt like saying they're not merely "open" but have someone "on duty" made it sound vaguely like they were going to conduct a military operation on your hair.

I think barber shops are more likely to have a set of hair styles they're pretty good at replicating, but are still able to do whatever you request just fine. Building theme and vibe can also differ, compared to salons which mostly look the same. Despite that, they always have a barber shop pole.
