seeing a lot of talk online about how "i'm so glad andor isn't using the volume" after the recent andor trailer. and i definitely do agree that it looks dramatically better than the production values of obi-wan. but to be honest The Volume™️ is just a tool, and how you use it matters (also i believe they still used the volume for a few cockpit shots on Andor, if the BTS video from a while back was correct). i'm very hesitant to immediately be like "the volume sucks, actually" because it's not like those first two season of mando didn't look pretty damn good. i think the simple fact is just that obi-wan specifically utilized it poorly. and hey! it's a developing technology, creatives will have to learn its strengths and weaknesses (essentially) on the fly. i also suspect a heavy dose of COVID production woes affected obi-wan and pushed them to use the volume more than anticipated.

the biggest way to make the volume look obvious is to make your set circular (or close enough to it) with a flat area in the center and a few props arranged within it. makes your set look like a final destination smash bros stage where the background just moves around the players lol. also is it just me or do the buildings look like they're bending (incorrectly) a bit due to the camera lens? the illusion is just very fragile throughout that show.

anyway this is all not to shit on the volume. i think it's pretty cool tech and has its place. but regular green screens and on-location shooting all have their place too. in the end, this is probably not really a controversial thing to say.
