generally, when you are being attacked in a hand-to-hand fight, you have two defensive options: dodge and block. dodges allow you to take no force upon your body and tend to be cheaper but require much more physical coordination; blocks are more expensive staminawise and do result in you being struck, but they're much easier to actually accomplish successfully. it is for this reason that, when a fighter in a martial arts or action movie is shown to only be dodging instead of blocking, you know the movie is telling you, hey: this one is hard as fuck. it's a statement of confidence and an insult to one's opponent at the same time: "i'm so much faster than you that i can move my whole torso before you can move your hand, and i know it."

man oh man is it fucking cool when they have the hard-as-fuck guy pull that move in this movie. the thing that makes monkey man feel so rich is the fact that they use everything to convey things about the protagonist—the camera angles and editing style, the music, and even the way he moves in combat himself. in physical movies like this, fight choreo is emotion. i have my gripes with some of the story beats in this movie (i think it could've used a couple more explicit nods to anti-casteism and religious pluralism, both of which are only briefly alluded to), but it is absolutely a masterclass in conveying emotion through motion. and this is dev patel's directorial debut! god i hope he gets to do more stuff; i can't wait to see it.
