today's pick is sigh, who have been a relentless force since 1989. i first became aware of sigh in 2012 with the release of in somniphobia and was immediately drawn to its wild sense of instrumentation. the lead single (if an album like this can be said to have a lead single) has bongos, moog synthesizers, saxophone, growled lyrics, clean lyrics, whistling, bar chimes, and a couple of other things i can't easily place on top of all the standard metal ingredients and a relentless 6/8 groove.

i also enjoyed graveward when it came out in 2015... but then i lost track of sigh, and they've put out two more albums since then. changing labels from candlelight (which I've heard of) to peaceville (which I have not) may have had something to with. here's the latest single; apparently they've taken increasing inspiration from traditional japanese music and are singing in japanese at least some of the time. but I haven't listened to the albums in full yet.
