the first place i saw people using "lol" i was like 10 years old, extremely sheltered, not online at all (although "online" meant "msn messenger and myspace" at that point, but still), playing some fantasy mmo. the font was kind of janky, and i was playing it on a tiny CRT display, so i thought everybody was roleplaying and saying "lo!" as like an archaic particle for an embarrassingly long period of time
