if i can get a jump the motor works just fine, and i might even be able to recharge the battery that way, but without it the engine won't start no matter how hard or how often i turn the key

That's a good way to put it
I always liken it to having a faulty transmission: I can give it as much gas as I want to and the motor will spin really fast, but if the gears never actually connect the wheels will just stay still
