greetings, all! COMPOST #4, the fourth installment of cohost's casual music-making compo, is here! (cohost. compo. compost. yes.) if you've got some time today, join us and make a little song!!

COMPOST is loosely based on the one-hour compo, a quick event where participants make a tune in one hour based on a prompt, or with a provided sample pack. although they're alive and well today (particularly in the form of "one-hour battles"), they go way way back to IRC channels of yore!

here's how our variant works:

  • follow the provided prompt; you can interpret it however you like, use it as a liftoff point
  • ideally you should spend one to two hours on your track maximum. but i'm not a cop, so do what feels right. the spirit of the x-hour compo is generally to make something quick and not feel pressured to polish : )
  • upload it here on cohost as an audio post once you're done
  • tag your submission with the tag COMPOST #4 so we can all check it out!
  • there's no scoring or judging or anything like that, but i highly encourage leaving nice comments and listening through the other submissions, as that's the most fun part! of course feel free to mention in your post if you do or don't want feedback
  • submission period is open for the next 24 hours, to keep this event timezone-friendly. it's beginning and ending at midnight EST. here's a countdown to help you out
  • if you want, you can make some other form of art also/instead. this was conceived as a music compo but there is really nothing stopping it from expanding further

if you're interested in checking out the previous installments of this series, here are some links - people have made all sorts of wonderful music in many styles & methods:
