EDIT i just realized it rendered super quiet, so crank up your tubes for this one! apologies!

hi folks! this is my COMPOST #4 submission! i don't want to spoil your initial reaction to the song, so i'm putting my explanation below a read more :eggbug:

i think moody piano might surprise some folks as an interpretation of "baking"! it kind of surprised me, too. i was listening to happy kirby music and jaunty jazz and bossa nova for like an hour before i started working this time, but something just wasn't sticking in my brain. when i think of baking, i think of quiet, soft, and most importantly, being up way, way, way too late.

i got really into baking for a bit last fall/winter, and in particular i learned how to make meringues by hand (i.e., manually beating the egg whites), which was a really meditative experience. i see it as happening in four phases: a careful phase of collecting and combining all the ingredients (if you get a bit of yolk in the mixture, it is no longer destined to be meringues), then a frantic phase of beating it like crazy for a good 15-20 minutes depending how hard you go, then a tense phase of putting them in the oven and waiting to see if they bake properly, and then a cathartic phase of finally getting to bite into a fresh, warm, delicious treat (or two (or three (or five))) when they're done.

i'm not sure how well i captured that feeling, but i really wanted to reflect that experience in this piece. i hope you like/d it!

incredibly pretty and meditative indeed! i think this is a lovely interpretation of the prompt and this piano writing is so cool - i kind of want to learn to play this myself. this is one of the most memorable entries for me, it totally captures that quiet late night with yourself feeling...
