When RightStuf licensed the ToHeart anime series in the US, they delayed releasing it because of "issues with the original video masters", specifically excessive jitter throughout and visible adhesive during every cut, which they tried to clean up the best they could (by 2006 standards, anyways).
Just as I was curious about how it looked beforehand, I found a rip of a Japanese DVD release with seemingly none of these changes. Here's a few frames of what happens with EVERY, SINGLE, CUT.
Beautiful.
What's extra tragic is this line from the RightStuf page I linked:
"One of the best ways to repair all of these issues is to do a complete film restoration. However, we quickly learned that that would be impossible – the original To Heart film masters were destroyed years ago, so the materials we had now were all we were going to get."
