PAPAYA - OPERATOR
OPERATOR
PAPAYA

"I heard a song on the radio, I'll call you up to sing it to you..."

Song: OPERATOR
Artist: PAPAYA
Genre: DANCEMANIA
First appearance: beatmania 5thMIX -time to get down-

Music from the Dancemania compilation albums released in Japan in the late 90's and early 2000's were a staple of the song lists of early DanceDanceRevolution games, so it's not shocking that Beatmania would get in on the fad, with 5thMIX grabbing a selection of seven tracks. The distinct sound of European dance music from that era is strong in OPERATOR - maybe it'll bring back memories for you even if you haven't heard this particular track before?

I always thought these Dancemania crossovers on Beatmania had happened shortly after their DDR appearances but it turns out the Beatmania ones were first, as 5thMIX was a month prior to DDR 3rdMIX, where Operator and a few of the others appeared (some of 5thMIX's never made it to DDR ever, amusingly). It's also interesting cuz to my knowledge, outside of Beatmania 5thMIX, the only other Bemani titles in general that had Dancemania crossovers besides DDR (and Dance Maniax) were the first IIDX versions (up to 3rd Style), and it was a similar case in that some never made it to DDR at all (eg: the Dr. Bombay songs) or just made it in later (Atomic Kitten's "Right Now" going from IIDX 3rd to DDR 5th, which was an even bigger gap of slightly over a year between the two)

Also yeah, that Eurodance sound is absolutely distinctive and it's still a delight to listen to. Sure, some may be cheesy, but that's part of why they're still just super fun tunes to listen to, and the fact that they were on some damn good games definitely adds to that.
