“Fifty-year-old Yuria has a quiet life teaching embroidery classes in her home, where she lives with her writer husband and his mother. Then one day her world is turned upside down when [her] husband has a subarachnoid hemorrhage and upon arriving at the hospital, Yuria is met by a tearful young man who announces that he is her husband’s lover.”

It's really really good. Very deep character drama where almost no character is totally in the wrong. You get so many glimpses into the past that are more mundane in addition to the mess of the present. If you've liked other literary josei this is for you. A lot of people are mad at this manga because of the cheating and how there's never any big showdown where they all get told they're evil for doing this to her. Instead Yuria ends up taking charge of the whole situation. She's gruff and assertive yet unwilling or unable to say no to responsibility. Not fitting in with the standards of womanhood shaped her into someone self-deprecating who settles for what she can get, and in her marriage she had total acceptance if quickly no romantic love anymore. In addition to the gay relationship she comes across queer-coded to me.

I also think the husband ends up being very likeable. He wanted to make the relationship with her work even though he was gay and in denial about it. He kept coming back to her despite all of his hobbies taking him everywhere. But he was keeping her stifled in a situation where her world revolved around staying at home to catch glimpses of him and nag him to take care of himself. So things had to change. His lover is an awful piece of work though and incredibly fun to read, I hope he keeps getting reality checks.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this up, this sounds right up my alley! I love work dealing with this type of topic, Giovanni’s Room is one of my favorite novels and I always wanted to read a reimagining that dealt with his fiancée’s experience. I’ve met a lot of men like this and I find them frustrating and interesting, it’s a dynamic I think about a lot and can never quite wrap my head around
