Now, to begin - Hey! claps hands You in the back, do you have something to share with the class? No? Well take your conversation outside or shut it down.

Where were we? Oh yes, Xena: Warrior Princess was a fantasy television series that ran from 1995 to 2001. Xena followed the titular warrior princess on adventures around the ancient world but is perhaps most famous for the strictly subtextual, open-to-interpretation relationship between lead character Xena and her traveling companion Gabrielle. We're here today to analyze this, and yes, this will be on next week's exam.

Now, we have many examples of the subtextual nature of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship. First off is this, Figure A moves to the next slide

in which Xena and Gabrielle looks at slide, starts to sweat oh my god just full on kiss. Um. Wow okay. Well, as you can see here it's impossible to tell from this photo whether or not Xena and Gabrielle are in a romantic relationship or just, um, very good friends because, um, shit, well I guess I'd say they're very obviously kissing each other subtextually. They could very much simply be two gals being pals and that's why this show has inspired such debate over the years because they never made anything explicit wipes sweat from brow

On to slide two, here we see Figure B

in which looks at slide oh geeze. How am I going to explain this one. Um well see, here we have another kiss from the Season 6 episode Return of the Valkyrie, where Gabrielle is cast as a fairy-tale princess, a Snow White or a Sleeping Beauty, awakened by the kiss of her, Prince Charming, Xena. Wow. Um holy shit. So, uh, who can really say WHAT the creators were thinking when they cast these two women in these traditionally heterosexual and explicitly romantic mythic roles and made them kiss. becoming increasingly stressed out as the students stare unamused Clearly it is, uh, once again 100% subtextual, and um, they could, very much just. Be friends because women.

And now we hit the next slide

and looks at the slide oh jesus christ I can't do this anymore gets up and walks out

Soon this post will be inaccessible except through the Wayback Machine and the last traces of my obsessive Xena fandom circa 2022 will be lost, like tears in rain

This is also why we need video game preservation
