ok this is the basic fort i like to make when i start a dwar ortress.
Notes on this:
- someone pointed out the corridors are too narrow. they're right. it's a habit i got from very early versions when dwarves couldn't move diagonally and had a hell of a time going around each other in wide corridors.
- the farms are under a ledge and are considered to be underground. I'll later add overground farms. set one farm to plant plump helmets on every season
- you want to make about 30 barrels and 10 beds to start with, and double that when the first immigration wave comes in
- it's important to make manager and bookkeeper offices as early as possible, to monitor stocks and give manufacture orders
- dig all gems you find, and cut them before the first caravan comes. in a pinch, stone mechanisms are also worth good money
- the carpenter workshop is outside because it's closer to the trees and logs are heavy. there's almost zero cost to building and later destroying a workshop. similarly i'll move the stone workshops down levels as i dig
