  • Public transit difference: It varies, but normally about 2 line changes at most.
  • Driving distance: Like 6 hours, though that can skew upward a little bit.
  • Train-riding distance: I live in America, unfortunately.
  • Flying distance: Anything above driving distance

  • 30min of manual powered transit at a time is pushing it for me, but I have asthma so that's probably lower than some
  • more than 1-3hr of driving is day trip distance, more than that feels like it has to be multi-day or like, leave early morning get back late at night to be worth it (6hr round trip, starting to be more traveling than destination)
  • 2hr public transit feels like my limit. I can do things on public transit like read or listen to things or sleep even that aren't feasible even as a passenger for longer trips, but it is still more uncomfortable so that starts to be an issue at around 4hr round trip
  • flying and train riding seem like inherently multi-day affairs for me, so for that there's basically no limit. I once did a 25hr greyhound ride (including layovers) for a guy that I broke up with later that week. I am capable of putting up with much more if I know I'll be able to just rest at my destination and not have to worry about doing things and the ride back with the same pool of energy.

these are all "the longest trip i will tolerate to achieve a task" not recreation

  • walking - 3 miles
  • cycling - 30 miles
  • transit - 50 miles
  • driving - cross country usa, unlimited
  • train - not really an option i use
  • flying - minimum 250 miles

that said, we'll frequently drive for anything >2 miles, though i've been working on biking more. planning to get a cargo bike next season with my state's new tax credit to improve that range to ~10 mile roundtrip, which should cover the vast majority of errands

lucas's breakdown of times rather than distances is roughly what i think too though i'm a big recreational cyclist so don't mind much longer bike trips if i can knock out a workout and an errand at the same time

  • Walking: about 1 km or less, generally speaking.
  • Cycling distance: up to about 10 km, if it's important.
  • Public transit distance: excluding the train, the bus and local tram/subway networks are only gonna take you so far, so within the same general region only - up to about 30 km.
  • Train distance, driving distance: about the same from where I live before flying becomes the more hassle free option, with the caveat of "to another major city at minimum" for the train; car has no minimum distance when I have to haul stuff around or need to be energized enough wherever I show up, otherwise it's wherever cycling would get too tiring. as for the maximum? across a few borders. I'd consider Poland, Spain and Italy about the upper limit from the Netherlands, here.
  • Flying distance: obviously no maximum because it's the last resort, otherwise, whatever would be at least a day trip away from me on a train. most of the way across europe, or whatever brings me to another continent altogether.
  • Ocean liner distance: see flying distance, if we still had these like back in the olden days. probably need to make a comeback with how awful for the environment flying is tbh. don't have a frame of reference for much else.

Makes sense! …also, damn, I wish I could say driving and train distance were the same for me, oh my god. (Especially with how Via operates out west, being prioritised below the nearly constant stream of rail freight to/from the port here, it's just. No.)

But yeah, about the furthest I'd actually want to drive is a horrifically long day. If it's getting into "this drive absolutely cannot be done safely without sleeping in the middle" territory, it's probably already cheaper and more environmentally friendly to fly, if I'm taking a trip alone. (The math is very different if I've got passengers.)

  • Walking distance: A couple of miles or so used to be the a comfortable walking distance for me. (Not any more. Depending on my agonies, anywhere between 50 meters and maybe a mile on a good day; and a lot slower than I used to be.)

  • Cycling distance: Did a stint of cycling 6 miles to work (and corresponding 6 miles back). That was about my limit, at the time. Probably could have pushed it further if I swapped out the seat for one that was a bit more comfortable, and ... y'know, the agonies. (But honestly, the only reason I was on my bike was because my car was broken.)

  • Public transit distance: 30 to 90 minutes, maybe longer on special occasions?

  • Driving distance: Depends on whether it's for work or not :') 5 continuous hours is about where I start falling apart.

  • Train distance: Could probably do 4 hours and not be too put out by that? It'd be nice to be able to have the slower pace of life I used to have, where I didn't have to be everywhere as fast as possible in order to make use of what little free time I have.
    's nice to just trundle somewhere on the train and not have to think about driving.

  • Flying distance: Honestly, anything international, what with the whole "surrounded by water" thing; but other than that, nah.
