I think I probably would have enjoyed Sorrow of Werlyt more if it was more tonally consistent. The villain is so over-the-top cartoonish compared to all of the other incredibly dark shit going on in that storyline that it made it difficult for me to take it seriously.

I hate the Sorrow of Werlyt story so bad that I can only summarize my feelings as: this is the only story in the entire game I think was such a mistake that I wish it had never shipped. Which is twice as much a shame because the duty content is pretty fun and it's not like I have complaints about the Gundam homage elements.

I think there's probably a pretty impactful way to write a story about a commander who adopts a bunch of orphans that end up dying for the same army that was in large part responsible for orphaning them in the first place, but I don't think Sorrow of Werlyt handled it particularly well. I have a few criticisms of it overall but I think my biggest gripe with Valens specifically is how he's like... Painted as being uniquely depraved within the Empire? I think it would have hit better for me if he was a more grounded reflection of Gaius, but instead he just comes across as distastefully written. He's so giddy and whimsical and not in an entertaining way like Fandaniel is.

It kind of feels like it's trying to hit Metal Gear in terms of its tone, but... Unsuccessfully.

There is absolutely an impactful way to write the story they trot out, imo. There's nothing inherent to it that means it could never work, which further increases my ire because sweet toast why did we get THIS? I know writing is hard but this ran alongside the 5.X MSQ!

I am resisting the impulse to unhinge my jaw in a booming hoot of rage on this topic because that's what my own blog is for, lmao, but yeah. Big, wrathful agree.

(Hmm, Metal Gear, you think? It's such a hot mess it hadn't even ocurred to me they might have been trying to hit any other tone in particular, but I am considering that now.)
