i feel like thomas pynchon respects his characters a lot more than other postmodern writers. from my (very limited) experience, ur palahniuks and foster wallaces like to portray humans as mindless zombies slavishly following the zeitgeist. but the most random pynchon character will have a rich, complex inner life and belief system, even if it leads them to exactly the ideology and mindset “They” want them to follow. that’s the whole point, and its much more interesting and sympathetic to read anyway. but im only halfway (500 pages) through Gravity's Rainbow, so what do i know?
