was chatting with @cass and @blep and talked about the idea to have a 'discovery tab' of sorts where you can specifically go to find new chosters and content a little bit outside of your usual sphere, filtered by tag, specifically intended to be 'intro post' and 'advertisement' type content for new people just finding you through this tab. think of it like an artists alley, for posting.

and you could pay Eggbug to be put in at the front of the alleyway. then people can come by to look and they will see you first. you could put commission posts or itch io links or whatever you want, and potentially they could be filtered by tags, etc like #gamedev or #background art. i think it would be better to keep monetization-powered content out of the normal tag search, though. keep it to the discover tab - separate from normal content, where everyone is aware that it is sponsored and is opting-in. this is a place where it would be nice to have one-click following for people without having to go to their profile too, a la tumblr.

also, to avoid the problems of Tumblr Blaze Catholicism, maybe have some degrees of separation slider you can set when searching or when creating your discovery ad, so your extremely niche content isn't going to people who will be extremely confused and possibly mad

testimonials:

"some tommy wiseau type person is just gonna pay 8000 bucks a month for 5 years to have their thing show up at the top
actually that would be a good thing wouldn t it" - @blep

anti-testimonials:

"[...] just reddit with paid upvotes"
"i would not use it [...]" - also @blep

my baseline point of comparison for something like this is Project Wonderful, which was a paid ad service a number of webcomics and other websites used to participate in from like 2006-idk-sometime-before-the-mspa-forums-died searches it up....2018.

and what was nice about it was that it being invite-only or some shit it was a curated group of people advertising

i need to think on this a little more to remember what i liked about it but the way it was opt-in and yes it gave priority to the highest bidder but also

idk where i'm going here

i want to toss a coin to my witchers or know they're getting other coins tossed if i happen to be broke i guess

if someone pays $8000 bucks a month for 5 years though

i think i should probably still be able to just block/mute their post? That seems in-line with eggbuggery pro choster strats

little button you can click that says 'Yes I Have Seen This Show Me Something New'

like a better version of blocking the account of the promoted twot so you get a new add

yessssssssss. i think project wonderful was one of the few times i felt real hope about making money and drawing attention on the internet. it was SUPER transparent! there was no 'why am i seeing this' because we KNEW. it was in the ad box, or a click away. you could see how much and how long an ad was running, who did it, where else they were advertising, etc. i was using project wonderful for my own goofy stuff, but it was nice clicking around questionable content's ad positions to see which sites though QC readers would be interested in. it felt hand crafted, in a way. and i found a bunch of great creators that way, it was like a web ring, but less Siren GIFs and Black Star Backgrounds.

and i loved knowing right away how much my attention was worth to the advertiser. "oh wow this webcomic launching 'soon' is paying like, $5 per click for this 930am friday slot lmao" vs "oh wow, it's 4am on a sunday so this hero banner is free and awwwww it's a hand drawn gf dedication".
