I'm... Not going to be homeless anymore? Soon? That's weird. So I guess this will be the last begpost for a minute. First of all - I do not need help with rent or utilities, I got that covered already. What I do need help with, is Stuff. Turns out that to live in a home, you need Stuff. Flatware, silverware, furniture... Hell I can barely spell Ikea. I have none such stuff. I haven't bought a coffee maker in twenty-five years. Since I'm not yet moved to my new home, I can't make like, a list on Amazon or whatnot, but until then, you can help me acquire Stuff via my kofi, as seen here: https://ko-fi.com/jebwrench

Read it and weep! That's 50... probably 50... of THE RPGs of... something. Big thanks to the extended Deep Hell community for all the submissions. Many of you had opinions on what is, is not, and could be a RPG. The consensus? We just don't know. But maybe this exquisite list will guide you towards some sort of deeper understanding.

It's odd to think that the 'metroidvania' genre is almost like, borne out of a mirage. Metroid did basically just two games that actually have the cross-map exploration that people think of as 'metroidvania', and Castlevania did maybe three of those. And even the ur-metroidvania, Symphony, is a much more directed and linear game than people think it is.

Yet there's a whole lineage of indie and small-studio games that ground their design not really in what those old games were but in the sort of half-remembered dream of what they felt like? And that's fascinating to me.
